The beaver's task has brought me back to consider this poem from a favorite book of prayers--a door...

Either you will
Go through this door
Or you will not go through.

If you go through
There is always the risk
Of remembering your name.

Things look at you doubly
And you must look back
And let them happen.

If you do not go through
It is possible
To live worthily
To maintain your attitudes
To hold your position
To die bravely

But much will blind you,
Much will evade you,
At what cost who knows?

The door itself
Makes no promises.
It is only a door.

sometimes the family stroll through the hogsback

1) ben in my favorite tree-chair
2) the beaver activity at the source of east hottes
3) the marble homestead foundation
4) marble lake ice fracture

...i can get you fixed up if you have any off-road riding needs...

Here's my stating of the obvious...

Picking the right bike for the conditions is key. The trail was wet, muddy and icy in spots...a studded tire up front and a tubular 27mm touring tire at 60psi on the rear was just about right. The fenders were nice today, too. Oh, and the regal saddle is becoming one of my favorites! Just a word of encouragement--as I stopped to take this picture I had a motorist stop and wish me well and ask if I needed anything...

A Bright new day

VI
We travelers, walking to the sun, can't see
Ahead, but looking back the very light
That blinded us shows us the way we came,
Along which blessings now appear, risen
As if from sightlessness to sight, and we,
By blessing brightly lit, keep going toward
That blessed light that yet to us is dark.

Happy Thanksgiving! Holiday ride report:

No travel advised! i was out for a ride on the trails at noon...watching cars going into the ditch and sliding through nearly every intersection i approached. the staff at my favorite lunch spot watched me ride to the front door, dismount the uni and make my entrance, covered in a solid layer of ice from head to toe...they're convinced i'm crazy--but in a good way not a sub way...

Do I love winter riding because
1) of the great scenery?
2) i just love riding this bike?!?
3) i get to use all of my studded snow tires!
4) the pugsleys have their season to shine??
5) i am in a panic to find something so blogworthy

I've carried around this bottle opener I found on the ground

On my favorite fixed gear route in omaha, I found this great bottle opener...I put it my tool pack and carried it around for years. Who knew it would one day come in so handy when doing battle with an endomorph!?! kari is correct...i didn't use this on the open road...i used it in the friendly confines...and of the guesses, the bottle cap guess was probably closest???

Sometimes, I've just got to ride my bike.

Sometimes I ride because my legs are angry,
and I want them to be quiet.
Sometime I ride because my heart is heavy
and I want it to lighten up.
Sometimes I ride my bike because
the wind is calm and the sky is blue
and if I don't ride I'll wonder why.
Sometime, I ride because I see the sun
shaking loose from the clouds--
and I want to say hello to my old friend.
Today, I rode because there was so much to thank God for,
I knew it would take me all the way around the lake
to finish praying.
But I was wrong--I'm still not done.
Thank you, God.
For life and love, open roads and places to go,
people to meet and sunshine on my shoulder.
Oh, and thank you God for bikes.

First cross ride of the season!

since you asked, Boji Biker

I really like graphs. Here is a graph of the blog views since June 2010.
I pretty sure that about 40% of these views are mine, 59% Spiderman, and the remaining views are the world at large. I haven't been keeping track of the number of comments, but I'm pretty sure that TOK wins at 13 comments.
