Preparing for a recovery ride:

If people fall, can they not also rise?
If they break away, can they not return?
The stork in the sky knows when to migrate,
The dove and the swallow know the season of return.
What human instinct knows the time to turn back?
What cue sparks the concience of the soul?
We pray to sense this day anew,
Attuned to the call of sacred living!

also no stranger to great garage sale finds...

...minnie two socks is back on the bike trail!
kari wants all ya'all to know her new full-fendered downtown commuter cost all of 10 dollars!
not sure how she does it with brakes that are essentially inoperative...
maybe she thinks the three speed hub without a shifter is really a fixed gear set-up where the brakes are, after all, just decoration!?!
ps...maybe that's why minnie looks so uneasy sitting up front!
(pss -- the blanket in the basket is really my favorite touch -- )

garage sale bargain gets another member of the peleton rolling

here is jeremy's new to him cannondale: the drivetrain is 3x6 and has sweet, 105 downtube shifters. the bike spins like a dream and brakes on a dime. here's to miles of smiles on your new ride!

bike to work week brings out bikes i haven't yet seen

and a trek with a saddle that i took off my fillmore and left on the bumper of the suburban until i couldn't find it!
...as it turns out, i just spoke to the owner of this discovery team bike--this saddle is 'the most comfortable (saddle) ever made'! hopefully, this is a sign that the noon peleton is going to grow!

Why???

New signage has appeared on the SouthWest side of Big Spirit, announcing that the road is closed. I've biked through the blockades twice now, and see no immediate evidence of roadwork. I remember with fear the concrete mixers and angry truck drivers of last summer's construction projects, and wonder "what looms for this summer's lake-loopage?"

What if I don't have a job?

I guess if I can't bike to work,
I could just show up at the side of the road
with a sign offering "Will bike for food."

just in time for national bike to work week...

the wheels are falling off!

...can't decide if the bike had enough
or my timing is just that bad.
nonetheless, i am fixing, gathering
and ready to get back out there.

obtw,
can you fish from a fixed gear
as you troll across the grade,
with the carp rolling by the road!?!

Ephemeroptera

Just wanted you to know exactly what you are picking out of your teeth if you are riding Big Spirit.

From Wikipedia...

Mayflies are insects which belong to the Order Ephemeroptera (from the Greek ephemeros = "short-lived", pteron = "wing", referring to the short life span of adults). They have been placed into an ancient group of insects termed the Palaeoptera, which also contains dragonflies and damselflies. They are aquatic insects whose immature stage (called naiad or, colloquially, nymph) usually lasts one year in freshwater. The adults are short-lived, from a few minutes to a few days depending on the species. About 2,500 species are known worldwide, including about 630 species in North America. Common names for mayflies include "dayfly", "shadfly", "Green Bay Flies", "lake fly", "fishfly,"[2] "midgee", "June bug", and "Canadian Soldier." The mayfly belongs to group 1 taxa, or pollution–sensitive animals. This means if mayflies are in or around the water, the water should be of a good quality.[3]

God's artwork tonight over West Lake

oBLOGicated to respond

from now on, the bike will just be photographed while being used as avera nice clothesline...
thanks for helping me change my ways!

S P R I N G commuting should bring a smile to your face...

however, the grimace on my face would suggest i am not yet symptom-free...

beautiful morning, though...and i think it's helping me in my rehab!

i'm about 50 percent and riding like betty white...but riding like betty white is way under-rated. anyone have a snickers???

--obtw, if you haven't seen that commercial, you need to ride less and watch more t.v.--
obtw2--thanks for the new helmet, dear!
obtw3--like my new kit??

llew has a question for the bloggers of the lakes:

does the old tape stay (road rash is cool)

or

is it off with the old and on with the new (would someone please approve some monogrammed green bar wrap for me)??

symptom free one week

hard as it is to follow my own advice...i think i'm pretty close.

...i'd have to say 'my advice' has been a little over-rated...

yet a one week rest has been quite valuable.

on the one hand, i realize that life goes on without riding and without me!

on the other, i think i appreciate God's blessing all the more.

after quite an internal debate this morning...the llew or not the llew--

i am back to riding fixed...and glad for the tuner of sheer simplicity:

while my phone has amnesia, i seem to be improving...

the blackberry can't remember how to blog! --i can remember how to ride...which is quite a relief. i was able to enjoy a very nice, muddy commute to work. at noon i took off for the hogsback via jemmerson slew. in the middle of the double loop i met up with doc taylor...we had an easy peasy jaunt back to his truck in order to get him back to his nurse on time. i then rode up the west side of little spirit to loon lake, south on the gravel past the old moorland bed and breakfast toward the cabin and back home on the east side's soft shoulder, throwing up clouds of mud in my wake! i had to stop several times and clear handfuls of mud from the chain for progress to continue....i'm thinking the purple pugsley just might have earned the name ''the big muddy" today...

This post is for the birds...

I took a quick lake lap this afternoon, and I need to report the outrageous number of birds squashed and laying on the bike trail. WHAT is the deal? Too much wind? Random impact with cars? Pesticides? Seriously, it started to get to me by the end of the lap--and I am generally unmoved by roadkill.

Do we have brains in our heads?

Sure we do! Jane and I enjoyed a chilly but wind-friendly day on the bikes. Jackson via Hwy 4 and the river road, with a return past Clear Lake and then Hwy 17 made for a fabulous fifty (or so)! Excellent TDK training...but, not as much pie as Spidey would have needed.

Head trauma gets a person understanding Rumi...I took this picture by accident...but thought it fit!

I will run fast and keep running until
I catch up with the riders.
I will dissolve into air and become nothing
So I can reach my Beloved.
I will become fire, burn my house
And head for the dessert.
I will become humble and turn into soil
So Your flowers can grow in me.
I will kiss the ground and become water
So I can flow into your rose garden.
I will make my face shine like a gold coin
So I can become worthy of my Beloved.
I came in this world helpless and fearful
But at the end of this journey I will find safety.
The blessing of truth is like water
It flows downstream.
I came to this earth so that I can find the way back
To my Beloved.

Spidey's cycling tip #7: always wear your helmet.

Even if you're not planning on being hit by passing mirror -- a helmet may protect your melon just enough for you to ride home and call for help! I am fine but may rest a few days just to see what that's like...

Loveall + Fixed + Fluger Hill =

YIKES! Tough first day out on the fixed! I was pretty sure I would name her "Can't Stop" but am now thinking "Can't Climb" might also be on the table. All in all I like it though, maybe even enough to call Indy Fab and see about getting some stickers to cover up the Serotta labels!

Matching serottas!

Who would have guessed?

i love the way they look together...and loveall's make a pretty nice couple, too!

his: steel fixed gear...i am hoping we get a little more from the man on the details of the build!

hers: legend ti -- fully geared with coasting capability!

to my examination...his bike is slightly ahead of hers and his saddle is maybe a half cm taller?? actually, on further inspection, it looks like jane just lowered loveall's post for the post! is that possible??? i think i can see the wrench in her left hand as she nudges the saddle lower with the right!

i don't know about any of the rest of us, but today was a great tdk training day...plenty of sunshine and wind!

oh, and did i mention--the red and black regal saddles really set the tone for the bikes being fully complementary--they belong together! how would you put it she-shew...there's a certain railyness to them??
