Inspired by thE KErnEl

There is an appointed time for everything.
And there is a time for every event under heaven.
A time to ski and a time to bike;
A time to plant the pole
and a time to uproot what is planted.
A time to tear apart and a time to sew up;
A time to glue and a time to refrain from gluing.
Two are better than one
because they have a good return for their skiing.
for if either of them falls,
the one will lift up his companion.
But woe to the one who falls
when there is not another to blog it.
What profit is there to the one who glues on white carpet?
I have seen the task which God has given the sons of men
with which to occupy themselves.
He has made everything appropriate in its time.
I know that there is nothing better for them
than to rejoice and to do good in one's lifetime;
moreover, that every man who bikes and glues,
who skis and waxes
--this man sees good in all his labor;
it is the gift of God.
Beyond this, my son, be warned:
the writing of many blogs is endless,
and excessive devotion to bonktown is wearying to the soul.
So eat, drink, bike, ski, blog and rejoice in your labor
for it is the gift of God.

Road wheels for woody are one step closer to rolling!

Winter has driven me to madness...just realize the tires stretch for 24 hours before they're glued--so I have done no permanent damage to the carpet--yet!

The commute to work--

Still feels like the depth of winter...at least as measured by the size of
The drifts and the presence
Of horizontal crystalline precipitation!

i am prepared to ski with anyone who is up for the challenge
this afternoon...i have applied light blue glide and dark blue kick wax
and am hoping for more protection from the wind out at hogsback
than i did out on 23rd steet just now!
call or text for biking or skiing.

if you aren't sure about equipment
i can fix you up.

Some things are better shared and in person...like

The west hottes Scenic overlook at sunset. Kari's psalm comes to mind. Thanks!

Psalm 19: 1-6

The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Day after day they pour forth speech;
night and night they display knowledge.
There is no speech or language
where their voice is not heard.
Their voice goes out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world.
In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun,
which is like a bridegroom coming forth to run his course.
It rises at one end of the heavens
and makes its circuit to the other;
nothing is hidden from its heat.

Yesterday, I felt like all of nature was speaking the language of God to each of us:
the warm sun on the sparkling snow,
the first songs of birds in the forest,
the shouts of laughter in the meadow by farmhouse hill.
All of it combined to pour forth speech from our Creator--
who gives us the Winter, and promises Spring.

Congratulations jane

On your first solo loop!
I am impressed with the groomed trail conditions
And your strong skiing!
--Allow approximately 54
Minutes for a double figure 8 with today's conditions--

Things to love about skiing Hogsback...

1) Fervent prayer downhill - and staying on your feet
2) Sweating when it is below zero
3) Shoveling the driveway knowing the trail will be fast
4) Wondering what a heart attack feels like
5) No cars!
6) Tunnel vision
7) Seeing divots where someone hit the deck
8) Farmhouse hill
9) Getting outside in the winter
10) The view of the great outdoors through fogged glasses

What else you got...

Hogsback is difted!

Come join me!

10feb10 update: after a double loop...there seems to be

a good groove back in our favorite place...the only drawback

NO ACCORDIAN MUSIC!

...just the sound of songbirds...i think it felt like spring

on the marble lake stretch--both ways!

Thanks again to eric!

The trail is once again freshly groomed

As of 1700 hours 10 feb 10
The sled made its final pull through.
I parked between the groomer and his prey
But have no worry
I pulled forward to allow his progress to continue
And was completely out of danger!
It was my maiden voyage with the waxed skis
Cenna fixed up for me!
I finally got the whole cross bike- waxless
Road bike- waxed ski analogy!
Wow was that fun!
Good thing there wasn't a full moon
Or I would still be out there!

Next time I will bring a line and a sinker!

Skiing from the cabin to hogsback I noticed more fishermen than skiing buddies!
Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry
I also decided to post this shot so that if I fell through
The ice where three or more fishing holes were placed together
You would have a point of reference of where to
Search for my body come spring...I have just promised
A debilitated patient that I will not only help him
Do the polar plunge next winter games...but I will
Take the plunge with him! I do indeed hope I float!!!
The idea began with this big spirit circumnavigation.

Here's the spidey springometer:

If you wake up on the 3rd of february and valve stems sprout from the soul/sole
Then spring is indeed already here!

Spring is Coming!

Here's what I found out about a sure sign of spring that inspired a second hogsback loop--
When Lee cuts your hair at 4pm on february 2nd and feels the warmth of the sun on his back
as he trims your eyebrows he will exclaim:
"Spring is on the way...we've only got a few weeks left"!

You are cordially invited...

...to join our team on a wonderful RAGBRAI adventure!!!

Who: If you're reading this...YOU!
What: A week rolling across the hot pavement of Iowa in July, peeing in cornfields, eating things off sticks...all with 15K of your closest friends...and maybe Lance...
When: registration, NOW...ride, July
Where: feel like I already covered this one...
Why: BECAUSE!!! If you register in the lottery as a group, if any group member is chosen, the rest automatically get in. We are stronger together! Plus, we already have a standing group...so it's super easy!

Details: Don't worry, just because you're a member of our little group, you are in no way obligated to ride with/talk to/tent near/acknowledge us at any point along the route. Unless, of course, you want to. I just thought I'd throw out the option for those wanting to register, to help your chances. All you need to do is click on the "register with group" button, or however they have it labeled this year, and select Team C.A.M.P. I will then have to "approve" you as a member of the group (I accept bribes) and then you're in!

Oh...what does C.A.M.P. stand for? It's really individual choice...my shirt says Chasing After My Pie...but it's up to you...
