This message could be for you, Spiderman! Although the video of you riding in the middle of the street is a nice addition to the blog.

Enough snow for you??

Easier biking than skiing today...the snow's pretty sticky out there!

Winter downhill--is coasting a sign of distress??

Should we ride or ski tomorrow??

i was stopped today
and was asked if i was ok...
it seemed to the passenger
(an elementary age student)
in the car that had just passed me
that i was in distress. she noticed i was coasting
instead of pedaling...and was concerned
that i had broken my chain!

Help! I've fallen, and I can't stop laughing.

It took me about twenty minutes to untangle myself
and to stop laughing long enough to become upright.
What kind of person would photograph a hapless fellow skier
so evidently in desperate need of assistance????

The First Dummy? [bike and ski content]

So I returned to Hogsback yesterday for my second dose of ski induced humility and it was actually a little better. There were moments when my oxygen-debt tunnel vision cleared up enough to notice that there are trees out there! The only odd thing I saw was that there were times that one ski track seemed to veer out very wide from the main trail. I didn't think much of it, mainly because I was busy trying to stay upright and conscious, but then I got to a part of the trail that had not been skied yet... most likely because it was ridiculously drifted... and there was that one single track running right through it. I stopped for closer examination and noticed that it was not a ski track at all but appeared to have been made by a set of 240 count Nokian studded bike tires. You may not know this about me, but I used to be a pretty fair tracker, so I bent down and tasted the snow (aka fell on my face) and quickly concluded that the tracks most likely belong to a very fit male, mid 40's, around 160lbs and maybe about a size 9/10 shoe, most likely riding a titanium bike of some sort that was pretty light and well made.

It would also appear that even Dr. Webb occassionally has to get off the bike as I found evidence he carried it up one especially nasty steep deep section on the backside.
So while I may have been the first knuckle-head to try skiing it, I wasn't the first one out there. Strong work James.

You forced me to do this!!

Okay, I vowed to play by the rules and only post cycling related stuff here. But when the recipe showed up....well, I just couldn't take it any more......I had to roll out the bellows. I just wish there was a way to download some sound to go with the picture.....use your imaginations and put a catchy tune with it.

I will admit it--i know next to nothing

About cooking and must have been zoning out during my med school nutrition lectures...but this I do know. Winter riding in the frozen tundra is fueled this week by black bean riding salad!
3 cans black beans
2 cans corn
2 groupings of cilantro
1 red onion
1 carton of grape tomatoes
3 tablespoons each of rice vinegar, olive oil and a special vinegary subatance that has a particulatly nice rimminess!
Served hot or cold
Hold the parsley...

Is Spring here yet?

Since this is now a multi-sport blog I feel ok about posting a ski report on my first outing of the season. Two observations... A) The DNR somehow figured out a way to make Hogsback longer? and B) There's a reason that the expression for not forgetting how to do something is "It's like riding a bike," and not, "It's like cross country skiing." I felt as smooth as cottage cheese. But at least I compensated for my complete absence of technique with my total lack of fitness! I'm thinking seriously of hibernating... would someone mind waking me up when it is time for lake laps and shorts?

photo for the cabinet

do i get extra credit
if i find THE bike shot
that the rest of the collage
should be built around??

i also like how the blog moderator
has changed the color theme
to match my latest post!
wow! what kind of salary
do you command for that kind
of innovation???

Decorating with Emma

Emma and I spent a day or two going through old magazines and printing online pictures of cycling so we could decorate my bike cabinet downstairs. She decided where the pictures would go and my job was to staple them in place. Here is the result! I think she has a pretty good eye.
I'll try to post a cleaner, non-phone pic but in the meantime... bonus points for identifying riders and bikes.

Since I last posted a picture of the new bike tunnel on Hwy.86 they've added the yellow sign. In winter we get excited about even small changes in the neighborhood

Other Wild-life

Jeff and I saw this unusual specimen on a lake lap yesterday. Hard to identify by the aluminum frame, coffee socks, riding clogs, and vintage helmet but we think it may have been a rare sighting of the "didn't plan on riding today" that is rumored to inhabit the northern shores of big spirit. We tried to stay close for better observation, but despite the look, the creature is extremely fast and dropped us on the hills.

wild life!

kari found this wildlife on a paddle around big spirit...

maybe sticking with the pedal would be easier on the eyes...because this sight would be much harder to find--

rolling laughter in this setting could be a very wet and cold experience!

anyone know where we are and how to get to this location by bike??

bonus point to anyone who can guess what else we saw on the water:

Things I love about Lake Laps

On today's lap...

Raccoon running through ditch, big doe standing on trail, a huge cat stalking mice, fish jumping out of the water at the grade, rabbit trying to outrun me, several flocks of various birds and a dog or 3. Not bad for a monday!

I have a bike named Silver

Silver brakes for cornstalks. I don't know what Silver is made of but Silver can survive bike crashes without getting scarred. Silver was my birthday present 2 years ago and we've done a few days of RAGBRAI, two Tour de Kotas and one wild ride through Hogsback.

i have a bike named woody

more deserving of the name...

Why We Bike

I like these pics

Nov. 8, 2008 - May get an earlier snow-cross this year?

To me these say - not that bright but love to ride... and bikes are to be ridden, not cleaned!

It's too dark to be riding when...

1. The other vehicles on the road have headlights on.
2. The street lights have been on for over an hour already.
3. You can't tell if the dark patch on the road in front of you is three dimensions or just two.
4. You take your sunglasses off, and don't notice any difference.
5. No one is shaking their fist or yelling at you...because they don't know you are there.
6. Even Spiderman would think twice.

Needless to say, I was biking a bit too close to dark today...but it was totally worth it. Around Big Spirit then south to Three Sons and back. Tomorrow's forecast is now 100% chance of rain. I know, I know: showers pass--but, c'mon already!!!!

PS They say that TacoHouse is closing soon.

what inspires you in your riding

is it wearing a livestrong helmet... it wearing no helmet at all...

riding a pink bike

riding with your spare in a figure 8...

the dream of a custom frame??

skidding on your fixed gear

with a rear studded snow tire??

you name it!

...this picture has several sweet spots...

post one that inspires you, too!

c'mon take the challenge--

and extra credit if you can tell me

who built the pictured bike!

New bike tunnel is open!

Remember what it was like to risk your life by biking on Hwy. 86? Well, folks, here it is....the new tunnel connecting to the bike trail on the west side is open! Oh sure you have to wallow through large amounts of mud to get there and there's plenty of mud in the tunnel.....but it's gotta be better than getting hit by a car.
